Elite Keypad & Intercom Repair: The West Covina Owner’s Guide

Elite keypad and intercom repair in West Covina typically runs $180 to $520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad face, the intercom board, or the full entry station. We stock Elite-compatible parts on the truck, and most keypad swaps happen same-day. The first sign most owners notice is a keypad that stops recognizing the code, or an intercom where the visitor side goes dead while the inside unit still rings.

What we see most often in West Covina is gradual failure: buttons that need harder presses over time, then a row that stops responding, then the whole pad giving up. California sun and the dry heat out here are hard on the membrane switches and plastic housings. By the time a homeowner calls us, they’ve usually been fighting the thing for a few weeks, propping the gate open for deliveries or walking out to the street to let guests in, which defeats the whole point of having an access system in the first place.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite makes several entry systems under the SL-series and the older EK-series numbering, and the keypad and intercom components don’t all swap across lines. The two we stock for are the Elite SL-3000 and SL-2000 entry keypads, the Elite IEX intercom modules, and the surface-mount and flush-mount versions of each, because the backbox dimensions differ. If your keypad is wired into a swing gate operator, the wiring harness is usually a two-conductor run back to the control board; on slide gates we more often see four-conductor because of the additional lock relay.

The fastest way to identify what you have is to pull the faceplate and read the label on the back of the board. Elite prints the model number and a date code there. If the plate won’t come off without breaking it, check the inside of the gate control box, installers often leave a second label there. One compatibility trap we see in West Covina regularly: keypads labeled SL-3000 that were paired with an older Edge receiver won’t talk to a new SL-3000 replacement board without reprogramming the receiver, even though the part numbers match. We plan for that before we start the swap.

On OEM versus aftermarket: we install both. For keypads, the OEM Elite part tends to last longer in direct sun because the housing is UV-stabilized. For intercom boards, a quality aftermarket equivalent often costs 30 to 40 percent less and performs the same, because the board itself never sees sunlight. We’ll tell you which one we’d put on our own gate at your house and let you choose.

Signs Your Elite Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

  • Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane switch contacts under the pad wear unevenly, and the most-used digits, usually the first two of the entry code, go out first. The keypad isn’t dirty; the switch layer is done.
  • The code works intermittently, especially on cold mornings or after heat spells. The circuit board under the pad is expanding and contracting with temperature, and a cracked solder joint is making contact sometimes and not others. In the San Gabriel Valley temperature swings, this shows up fast.
  • The intercom rings inside but you can’t hear the visitor. The microphone in the outdoor station is corroded or the audio amplifier on the board has failed. If the speaker still hisses, that’s the amp; if it’s dead silent, that’s usually the mic circuit.
  • The visitor side works, but the keypad doesn’t release the gate. The relay on the keypad board is failing. You’ll hear the click sometimes and the gate won’t move; that’s the relay contacts burning out.
  • Water inside the housing or condensation on the lens. The gasket behind the faceplate has hardened and shrunk. In West Covina’s dry climate, gaskets dry out instead of rotting, same end result.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In West Covina, a keypad-only replacement runs $180 to $340 installed. A full entry station with keypad and intercom combined runs $320 to $520 installed. The spread depends on whether you need a surface-mount or flush-mount housing, whether we’re reusing the existing wiring or pulling new conductors through, and whether you choose OEM Elite or a quality aftermarket equivalent.

The price you’re quoted is the price on the invoice. We write it down before any work starts, and it covers the part, the labor, the reprogramming, and a written guarantee on the repair that’s good for a full year. If the repair fails inside that year, we come back out and fix it at no charge. That’s the whole agreement, and it’s the same agreement we run on every Elite repair in West Covina.

DIY or Call Us?

Elite keypads and intercoms run on low voltage, usually 12 or 24 volts DC, so a homeowner testing wires won’t get hurt. The danger is in the gate, not the keypad. When a keypad replacement gets miswired, the gate can behave unpredictably: it might not open, it might open and not close, or it might sit there and try to open against the limit switch until the motor burns up. That’s the expensive mistake, and we’ve repaired it more than once after a homeowner gave a keypad swap a shot.

What you can safely check before calling: confirm the keypad has power, test a spare code if one was programmed, and make sure the connections inside the control box aren’t visibly loose or corroded. If any of those checks are beyond what you want to touch, call us at (925) 268-7956. We’ll take care of it.
