BFT keypad and intercom repair in West Covina typically runs $180 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad module, the intercom handset, or the wiring between them. Most repairs are same-day when the part matches what’s already in the wall, because our trucks carry BFT-compatible keypads and the common intercom components that fail first. The call usually starts the same way: the gate opens fine from the remote, but the keypad stopped responding, or the intercom crackles and cuts out, or a visitor punches a code and nothing happens.

We’re an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with BFT. What we are is a crew that works on BFT systems almost every week across the San Gabriel Valley, and we know these keypads and intercoms well enough to diagnose the problem over the phone about half the time.
Here’s what owners in West Covina need to know before they spend a dollar on this repair.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has built a lot of different keypad and intercom lines over the years, and they’re not all interchangeable. In West Covina, we regularly see the MITTO series keypads, the PERSEO and THALIA intercom panels, and the older DIGIKEY flush-mount keypads still running on swing gates installed in the early 2000s. The BFT RIGEL and BFT SUB series enclosures show up on slide gates throughout the neighborhoods around South Hills Country Club, where a lot of those original installations are reaching the age where the electronics finally give up.
The fastest way to identify your BFT keypad is to open the faceplate and look for the model tag on the back of the circuit board. It’s a small white or metallic label with a model number printed on it. If the tag is gone or faded, measure the rough opening in the mounting box: most BFT wall-mount keypads are 110mm wide by 160mm tall, but the flush-mount DIGIKEY runs smaller and the THALIA panel runs larger. A tape measure narrows it down to two or three possible models, and that’s usually enough for us to bring the right part the first time.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question, our answer for BFT is specific. BFT’s newer keypads use surface-mount electronics and proprietary connectors. We’ve seen enough generic aftermarket boards fail within a season that we’ll recommend OEM BFT or a proven equivalent for keypads and intercom boards. For the simpler parts, the wiring terminals, the mounting screws, the external push-buttons, a quality aftermarket part performs fine and costs less. We’ll tell you which is which before we order anything.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate won’t open. This usually points to a dying relay on the keypad’s control board, not a programming issue. The display or backlight works because those run off the low-voltage supply, but the relay that actually tells the gate operator to open no longer closes.
- Some buttons work and others don’t. Water intrusion is the usual culprit, especially on West Covina keypads that face south or take full afternoon sun. The heat accelerates seal breakdown, then the morning condensation gets in and corrodes the carbon contacts under specific keys.
- The intercom buzzes or squeals when pressed. This is a failing audio capacitor or a short in the two-wire intercom run. It’s rarely the homeowner’s fault. The components wear out, and the buzz is the first thing you’ll notice before the audio drops out entirely.
- Call volume fades in and out, or one side can’t hear the other. The intercom handset uses a small amplifier that degrades over time. In many BFT panels, that amplifier is integrated into the main board, which means board-level repair or replacement, not a simple handset swap.
- Codes erased or forgotten after a power blink. Older BFT keypads stored codes in volatile memory with a small backup battery. When that battery dies, which is common after 8 to 10 years in our local climate, every power interruption wipes the memory. If you’re re-entering codes quarterly, the battery or the storage chip has failed.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In West Covina, a BFT keypad replacement with a new compatible unit and full programming runs $180 to $320 installed. A BFT intercom panel or intercom board replacement lands between $240 and $420. If the problem is wiring between the keypad and the operator, which is common on older installations where the conduit has shifted or filled with water, expect $140 to $280 depending on the run length and whether we’re pulling new wire or splicing a clean section.
Every price on this page is a range, not a quote. Here’s why. The final number depends on the exact BFT model, whether we’re replacing one component or the whole assembly, and access. A keypad on a stucco column is faster than one embedded in a masonry pillar. What you should know is that the price you’ll pay is written down before we start, and it doesn’t move. We’ve been burned by no-show contractors and moving prices like everyone else. When Lonnie Burke started this crew, the whole point was to be the company that did the opposite of that.
Every BFT keypad and intercom repair includes the part, the labor, programming of up to 25 user codes, testing with your existing remotes, and a written guarantee covering the full year. If the keypad fails within that year, the second visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s one thing you can safely check before calling us, and one thing you shouldn’t. Check the breaker and the low-voltage transformer first. A surprising number of BFT keypad failures in West Covina are actually a tripped breaker or a failed 24-volt transformer, and both are things a homeowner can identify with a multimeter and a quick look at the panel. Fifty dollars for a transformer is a better outcome than a service call for a keypad that was fine all along.
Here’s where DIY goes wrong. BFT keypads connect to the gate operator’s control board at low voltage, but that board also carries line voltage for the motor. It’s not a beginner wiring job. Short the wrong terminals and you can fry the operator board itself, and now you’re looking at a $600 to $900 motor repair instead of a $250 keypad swap. The keypad and intercom are also safety devices on a moving gate. A miswired intercom or keypad can leave the gate undriven while people are trying to pass through. The gate either works right or it doesn’t, there’s not much in between.
If you’ve checked the breaker and the transformer and the keypad is still dead, call us at (925) 268-7956. We’ll diagnose it over the phone when we can, then show up with the part already picked out.
FAQs
Seven to ten years is typical for a BFT keypad or intercom panel in the San Gabriel Valley, though units facing south with no shade can fail closer to six. Heat and UV are the biggest factors, followed by water intrusion and power surges. We keep LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls parts on the trucks as well, so if a BFT part is discontinued, we can usually match the gate and the budget with an equivalent.
Sometimes, if the failure is mechanical, like a stuck button or a corroded terminal, we can clean and repair it on the spot. If the failure is on the circuit board itself, repairing a 10-year-old board costs more in labor than a new unit, and the repair rarely holds. We’ll show you the failing part and let you decide based on the written price.
Most BFT keypad replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on site. Intercom panel replacements run one to two hours. If we’re pulling new wire, plan for two to three. You’ll get a time window before we arrive, and the technician who shows up is background-checked and in uniform.
Yes, we carry the common BFT MITTO keypads, RIGEL replacement boards, and intercom components on the truck. Less common models are available from our local suppliers in one to two business days. Call (925) 268-7956 with your model number and we’ll tell you what’s on hand before you schedule anything.
